Which Odoo do you need? Online, Odoo.sh or self-hosted
The decision that costs the most to undo later. Here are the real differences — no marketing — between Odoo's hosting tiers, what changes for CFDI 4.0 e-invoicing in Mexico, and why Odoo's standard cloud may rule you out without telling you.
- 3 PACs on Odoo Online
- Enterprise for native stamping

Three questions define your case
If you answer "yes" to any of these, Odoo Online is out. Better to know before you sign, not after.
Do you invoice a retail chain or an automotive OEM?
Soriana, Femsa, Chedraui, automotive and several corporates require an addenda: their own XML block inside the CFDI. Addendas need a module, and Odoo Online does not take modules.
Do you already have a PAC you will not change?
Odoo Online only ships with Solución Factible, Quadrum and SW Sapien. If you use factura.com, Finkok, Facturama or another, it cannot be added: the connector is code.
Do you need stamped payroll or custom development?
Mexican payroll with its CFDI ships in no Odoo edition — it is always a separate module. Same for any process that does not exist out of the box.
Where your Odoo runs: the differences that actually matter
All three tiers run the same Odoo. What changes is what you can install on top — and that decides whether you can comply with the SAT in your specific case.
| Odoo Online | Odoo.sh | Self-hosted | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party modules and Apps Store | No | Yes | Yes |
| Custom development | No | Yes | Yes |
| PAC outside the 3 supported | No | Yes | Yes |
| Retail and automotive addendas | No | Yes | Yes |
| Access to code and database | Limited | Yes | Full |
| Upgrades and backups | Odoo handles them | Odoo handles them | You do (or we do) |
| Edition included | Enterprise | Enterprise | Community or Enterprise |
| When it fits | Standard invoicing, no addendas | You need custom code but not servers | Full control, data in-house, or Community |
The Odoo Online restriction is verbatim in Odoo's own documentation: it is incompatible with custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store. This is not a configuration limit you can negotiate with support — it is how that tier is built.
Community or Enterprise: the difference that decides whether you can invoice
This is where most people get it wrong, and the fix is expensive. Community is not "Enterprise with fewer reports": for the SAT, the difference is structural.
| Community | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| License cost | Free | From MXN $180–225/user/month* |
| Mexican chart of accounts and taxes (l10n_mx) | Yes | Yes |
| Native CFDI 4.0 stamping (l10n_mx_edi) | No | Yes |
| Payment complement, Carta Porte, DIOT | No (needs development) | Yes, by configuration |
| Electronic accounting | No (needs development) | Yes, by configuration |
| Stamped Mexican payroll | No | No — separate module on both |
| Official Odoo support | Community | Included in the license |
| To invoice you need | Third-party or custom module | Configure and connect your PAC |
*Odoo's official public list price for Mexico, annual plan, July 2026. This is not our quote: you pay the license to Odoo, not to us. The Custom plan — the one including Studio, multi-company and external API — starts at MXN $274–342 per user per month.
What CFDI 4.0 invoicing in Odoo actually requires
With Enterprise properly set up, stamping is configuration, not development. These are the real requirements.
Prerequisites with the SAT
A valid RFC, your Digital Seal Certificate (CSD: .cer and .key files with their password) and a contract with an authorized PAC. Your company handles these, and they usually drive the project calendar more than the configuration itself.
The three built-in PACs
Odoo integrates Solución Factible, Quadrum and SW Sapien. Any other PAC requires developing the connector, and therefore Odoo.sh or self-hosting. Check this before signing with a PAC.
You can test without contracting a PAC
Odoo ships a test environment: tick the PAC test environment box with Solución Factible and it asks for no username or password. Enough to validate the whole stamping flow before spending a peso.
The real work is in your catalogs
Every product needs the SAT's ClaveProdServ and ClaveUnidad, and every customer their RFC, tax regime and CFDI use. With hundreds of SKUs or a messy customer base, that is where the time goes — not in the setup.
The legal name must be exact
It has to match the SAT registry character for character. It is the number one cause of stamping rejections, and we learned it in our own operation.
Decide the localization before invoicing
The fiscal localization package can only be changed while no accounting entries have been posted. Start operating with the wrong setup and fixing it stops being trivial.
The Odoo Apps Store: what it is and where it helps
It is the marketplace where third parties publish modules that extend Odoo. For Mexico there are dozens of ready-made addendas and complements — but only if your tier accepts them.
It does not work on Odoo Online
Same restriction: that tier takes no Apps Store or custom modules. Buying a module there enables nothing if your Odoo runs on the standard cloud.
It does work on Odoo.sh and self-hosted
There you can install store modules, OCA community modules or custom-built ones. It is the normal route for retailer addendas and specific complements.
Quality varies widely
Excellent modules sit next to ones abandoned on old Odoo versions. Before putting one in production you must check it is maintained for your version and audit what it actually does.
Your case, in one line
The honest recommendation based on what you need. If your case fits Odoo Online, we will say so even when it means less work for us.
SMB invoicing normally, no addendas
Odoo Online with Enterprise and one of the three PACs. Fastest route and cheapest to maintain: Odoo handles upgrades and backups.
Odoo OnlineSupplier to retail chains or automotive
Odoo.sh with Enterprise. You need to install addendas, and that requires a tier that accepts modules.
Odoo.shYou already have a PAC and will not switch
Odoo.sh or self-hosted, with your PAC's connector developed. Exactly what we did for our own operation.
Odoo.sh or self-hostedYou want to avoid the license cost
Community self-hosted, with a stamping module. You save the license but take on development and maintenance: it pays off past a certain number of users, and we tell you which.
CommunityWe are not repeating what we read
iTechDev runs its own operation on Odoo 19 Community: sales, projects and invoicing. Since Community ships no stamping, we built our own PAC connector and audited it against the SAT's Anexo 20. That is why we can walk through both routes in detail — we live both.
Frequently asked questions

Contact us →Can more PACs be added to Odoo Online?
No. Odoo Online accepts only Solución Factible, Quadrum and SW Sapien, because adding a PAC means installing code and that tier takes no custom or Apps Store modules. If your PAC is a different one, the options are Odoo.sh, self-hosting, or switching to one of the three supported PACs — which is sometimes the cheapest answer.
Can Odoo Community invoice in Mexico?
It can, but not out of the box. Community includes the Mexican chart of accounts and taxes (l10n_mx), not the stamping module (l10n_mx_edi), which is Enterprise. To invoice from Community you need a third-party or custom module. We built ours, so we know exactly what it costs in time and maintenance.
Does publishing a module on the Odoo store solve the Odoo Online limitation?
No. The restriction is not about where the module comes from but about the tier: Odoo Online installs no third-party modules at all, including from Odoo's official store. Store modules only work on Odoo.sh or self-hosted.
How long does setting up CFDI 4.0 take?
The technical configuration itself — localization, certificates, PAC and series — is a matter of hours when the edition is right. The project calendar is driven by two other things: your company's paperwork with the SAT and the PAC, and the state of your product and customer catalogs. In the assessment we give you the estimate for your specific case.
Can I start on Odoo Online and migrate later?
Yes, migration is possible, but it is better to decide well upfront: the fiscal localization package can only be changed while no accounting entries have been posted, and migrating with fiscal history already generated is a project in itself. That is why we insist on qualifying addendas and PAC before starting.
Do you sell the Odoo license?
No. You pay the license directly to Odoo at its public list price. We charge for implementation and support. We are Odoo Ready, with no invented Gold or Silver tiers, and the configuration and code we deliver are 100% yours.
