Odoo Inventory: how it works in Mexico
Odoo Inventory tracks stock, warehouses and movements with double-entry logic — every unit that comes in leaves somewhere else. Here is how it actually works, the decisions you must make before configuring it (costing, lots, multi-warehouse) and what it means in Mexico, where inventory ends up touching accounting and CFDI.
What is the Odoo Inventory module?
Odoo Inventory is the module that records what you have, where it is and how it moved.
- LocationAny place a unit can be, including vendors and customers. Movements always go from one to another.
- RouteThe sequence goods follow in or out: one step (direct), two (receive and store) or three (with quality control).
- Reordering ruleMin and max per product: when stock drops below the minimum, Odoo proposes the purchase or production order.
- CostingHow your stock is valued: standard, average (AVCO) or FIFO. Decided before you operate; changing it later hurts.
- Lot and serialTraceability by group (lot) or individual unit (serial). Mandatory in several industries, impossible to improvise later.

It works on the same double-entry logic as accounting: stock never simply appears or disappears — every movement goes from one location to another (vendor, warehouse, customer, scrap, adjustment) and stays traceable. That is what lets you audit a discrepancy months later instead of arguing about it. It ships in Odoo Community with no licence cost; what changes in Enterprise is not basic inventory but the pieces around it, such as official accounting.

What the module includes
Traceable movements
Every receipt, delivery, transfer and adjustment carries date, user and source. A discrepancy gets investigated, not guessed.
Multi-warehouse and locations
Several warehouses, and inside each one aisles, racks or zones. You choose how fine the detail needs to be.
Reordering rules
Min and max per product and warehouse. Odoo proposes the purchase or manufacturing order when it is due.
Lots and serial numbers
Traceability both ways: which lot a sale came from, and which customers a lot went to.

Decisions to make before configuring
1Costing method
Standard, AVCO or FIFO. It sets the value of your inventory and what your accountant sees. Changing it once history is loaded is expensive; it is defined up front.
2Automatic valuation?
Whether inventory posts journal entries in real time or is reconciled per period. This is the boundary between warehouse and accounting, and it should be agreed with whoever closes the month.
3Location granularity
A whole warehouse, or down to the rack. More detail means better lookup and more capture discipline. Choose based on who will operate it.
4Traceability
None, by lot or by serial. If your industry requires it — or will — decide at the start: adding it later means recapturing stock.
5Receipt and delivery steps
One, two or three. More steps mean more control and more clicks. The real operation decides, not the ideal diagram.
6What migrates
Catalogue and balances almost always; full movement history rarely pays off. We decide what is worth bringing and what stays as reference.

Inventory ships in Community with no licence cost: locations, routes, lots, serials, reordering rules and costing. What usually pushes companies to Enterprise is not inventory itself but official accounting and some surrounding apps. If the question is which one applies to you, we settle it in the diagnostic before you pay for licences you will not use.
Does inventory connect to accounting automatically?
It can, but it is a decision, not a default. With real-time valuation every movement posts its entry; with periodic valuation you reconcile at close. The first gives a live picture and demands the warehouse captures well; the second is more forgiving and leaves you blind between closes. Agree it with your accountant before the first month-end, not after.
Can I change the costing method later?
Technically yes, in practice it hurts. Changing costing once history is loaded forces revaluation and makes comparisons against prior periods useless. That is why it is one of the first decisions of the project and not a configuration tweak.
Does it work if I sell online and in store at the same time?
Yes, and it is where the difference shows most: Point of Sale, the online shop and counter sales all draw from the same stock, so you stop selling what you no longer have. It requires defining which warehouse serves each channel — configuration, not development.
Does inventory have anything to do with CFDI?
Not directly — CFDI is issued by invoicing — but they meet at two points that matter in Mexico: cost of goods sold feeding your reports, and Carta Porte when you move goods, which is built from transfer data. If you ship product between cities, plan that from the design stage.
How long does it take to get running?
It depends on how much has to be decided and cleaned, not on the software. What stretches an inventory go-live is a dirty catalogue: duplicate products, inconsistent units and balances nobody has reconciled.
