Payroll in Odoo: what it takes in Mexico
The honest answer before you ask: Mexican payroll is where ERP projects get stuck most, and in our packages it is quoted separately on purpose. Here is why, and how to decide it well.
Is Odoo suitable for Mexican payroll?
iTechDev quotes Odoo payroll separately and excludes it from every implementation package, and it is worth explaining why before explaining what the module does.
- PayslipThe record of each payment. In Mexico it is also stamped as a CFDI.
- IncidentsAbsences, overtime, leave and holidays that change the period calculation.
- Employment subsidyPart of the income-tax calculation that changes by table. Among the most commonly misconfigured.
- Severance and settlementThe exit calculation, with different rules depending on the reason for separation.
- MaintenanceWhat almost nobody budgets: who updates tables and rules when they change.
See in detail
Odoo has human-resources management — employees, contracts, time off, attendance — and that works well and fits into a normal project without drama. Payroll is another matter. Calculating Mexican payroll involves social security, income tax with its tables and employment subsidy, benefits, incidents, profit sharing, severance and settlements, and stamping every payslip as a CFDI with the tax authority; and all of that changes by decree and by reform, not when a vendor finds it convenient. It is the deepest and most living localization in the country. That is why we treat it as a separate project with its own scope, and why we are wary of anyone slotting it as a line item inside a fixed package: not because it cannot be done, but because the real cost of maintaining it year after year does not fit inside an implementation price.

When payroll belongs in Odoo
What gets assessed before deciding
Your real pay schemes
Weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, mixed. How many actually coexist — almost always more than management thinks.
Benefits and variables
Bonuses, commissions, vouchers, savings funds. Each variable is a rule, and the rules are the project.
Payslip stamping
Every payslip is stamped as a CFDI. Confirmed with the PAC as in invoicing, before committing a date.
Who maintains the rules
The question that decides the whole project. Tables change and someone has to update them each time.
HR without payroll
Employees, contracts, time off and attendance do fit a normal project, and often that is what you actually needed.
The alternative route
Leave payroll in your current system or with your firm and integrate only the accounting entry. Often the sensible option, and we say so even when it sells less.
How we decide it with a client
1First: do you really need it inside?
Many companies only want payroll cost to reach accounting. That is a small integration, without moving whoever calculates it well today.
2Who answers for compliance
We implement systems; fiscal and labour judgement belongs to your accountant or firm. That split is agreed in writing before starting.
3How many schemes coexist
All of them are gathered, including the odd cases that apply to three people. That is where the effort goes and where it gets discovered late.
4The cost of maintaining it
Not the cost of implementing it. Annual maintenance is sized from the start, or the project looks cheap today and expensive in two years.
5Parallel run
The new payroll runs alongside the current one for at least a full period, compared line by line before switching the old one off.
6Cut-off date
Never mid-year if avoidable. Changing payroll systems mid-year drags accumulated figures and complicates close.
Tech stack
The tools and platforms we build it with — chosen for your problem, not for hype.
Questions about Payroll in Odoo
Can't find your question? Talk to an engineer — no sales script.
Contact us →Why is payroll not in your packages?
Because it does not honestly fit. Mexican payroll has its own scope, its own parallel run and above all its own annual maintenance cost, which looks nothing like an implementation. Slotting it into a fixed price would mean selling cheap today what is paid for dearly later.
So Odoo is no good for payroll?
That is not what we said. We said it is a separate project and the decision is about who is best placed to maintain it. What we do state confidently: HR management — employees, contracts, time off, attendance — fits a normal project, and for many companies that is what was actually needed.
Can I leave payroll where it is?
Yes, and very often that is what we recommend. The accounting result of each period is integrated into Odoo: your firm keeps calculating what it already calculates well, and your accounting stops being keyed by hand. Cheaper, faster and lower risk than migrating payroll wholesale.
Who is responsible for the calculation being correct?
Fiscal and labour judgement belongs to your accountant or firm; we implement and configure the system to execute that judgement. We put it in writing from the start, because taking on someone else’s compliance responsibility helps nobody and in payroll it is where confusing it costs most.
What about stamping payslips?
Each payslip is stamped as a CFDI, same as an invoice, with your seal and through a PAC. Confirm the provider supports what is current before committing a date — same discipline as invoicing.
How long does it take?
Longer than people expect, and most of it is not configuration: it is gathering every real pay scheme and running at least one period in parallel, compared line by line. It is quoted separately precisely because the range depends on your headcount and how many rules coexist.
