PROJECTS MODULE

Odoo Projects: hours and profitability

Tasks, hours and invoicing in one place. What makes this module valuable is not the boards: it is that a logged hour becomes an invoice and a profitability figure without anyone building a spreadsheet at month end.

What does the Odoo Projects module do?

iTechDev implements Odoo Projects and runs its own delivery on it, so what we say here comes from operating it rather than from the brochure.

  • TaskThe unit of work. Hours are logged on it, conversation happens on it, deliverables attach to it.
  • TimesheetThe time record on a task. It feeds the invoice and profitability.
  • Service policyWhether you invoice on delivered hours, on milestones or upfront. It sets how the project bills.
  • ProfitabilitySold versus the cost of logged hours. It appears by itself only if hours get captured.
  • MilestoneA dated deliverable. It can trigger invoicing and lets you report progress without guessing.
See in detail

The difference between this module and any task tracker is what happens after you move the card: the hour your team logs against a task can become a customer invoice and feed project profitability, with no rekeying anywhere. That circuit — sell a service, have the project created automatically, log hours, invoice what was delivered and see the margin left — is what justifies putting projects inside an ERP instead of using a standalone tool. And it ships a piece almost nobody uses: the customer can enter through the portal to see their tasks and comment, with no Odoo user and no licence cost. The entry condition is uncomfortable but honest: if your team does not log hours with discipline, the module gives you nice boards and none of the three things that matter.

WHY ITECHDEV

Six operational reasons, zero adjectives

The code is yours from day one

Repos in your name, documented CI/CD and zero vendor lock-in. If you leave tomorrow, you take it all, running.

New

WhatsApp API with an official provider

We are a Meta Tech Provider: your WhatsApp Business API line with no middlemen, and chatbots wired to your ERP.

Sprint delivery you can click

A working demo every two weeks and measurable progress. No "it’s 80% done" without something you can click.

New

AI applied to your operation

LLM agents, RAG over your data and process automation — the same practice we use to run iTech itself.

Real nearshore: Texas + Monterrey

Legal entity in the U.S. (iTech Corp, Texas), contracts under U.S. law, same CST time zone and USMCA.

New

ERP with CFDI 4.0 invoicing

We implement Odoo with integrated SAT stamping (PAC), client portal and reconciliation — a full operation, not just software.

When this module solves something

You bill by the hour and collect them from three places at month end.
You do not know which projects made money until it is over.
Your customer asks how it is going and someone builds a report by hand each week.
You sell services and the project gets created manually afterwards, losing the link to the sale.
Hours are logged in one tool and the invoice built in another.
You have a distributed team and nobody sees the real workload.

What the module includes

Tasks with stages

Board per project or stages shared across projects, depending on whether you want comparison or flexibility.

Subtasks and dependencies

Work hanging off other work, and tasks that cannot start until another finishes.

Time logging

On the task, from web or mobile, with cost per profile feeding profitability.

Sale linked to project

Confirming a service order creates project and task without anyone keying them.

Invoicing on delivery

You invoice what was actually logged, not what was estimated, and the order reflects progress.

Profitability

Revenue against hour cost per project, to know what kind of work is worth selling more of.

Customer portal

The customer sees tasks, comments and follows progress with no internal user or licence.

Milestones and status updates

Progress declared by the project — on track, at risk, on hold — instead of reported by hand.

Decisions to make before configuring

1Will hours be logged or not?

The decision that defines everything. Without hours there is no delivery-based invoicing and no profitability, and the module is just a board. If the answer is no, better known before paying to configure it.

2Shared stages or per project

Shared gives comparable reporting; per project gives flexibility and useless reporting. Almost nobody decides it and everybody inherits it wrong.

3Billable and non-billable projects

Separate customer delivery from internal work from the start. Mixing them contaminates profitability and does not get fixed later.

4Cost per profile

What each role’s hour costs. Without it, profitability is an invented number that looks like a report.

5What does the customer see?

Which tasks and fields are visible in the portal. Your internal stage names become commercial messaging the moment you open it.

6How it bills

On delivered hours, on milestones or upfront. Agreed with whoever collects, not left on default.

Tech stack

The tools and platforms we build it with — chosen for your problem, not for hype.

Questions about Projects in Odoo

Contact us →
Is Projects in Community?

Yes, along with time logging. What is Enterprise are the services apps around it — shift planning, helpdesk, field service — not project and task management itself.

Can the customer see and move the project?

They can view and comment through the portal at no licence cost. And if you want them to edit, project sharing offers three levels: read, limited editing of followed tasks, or full editing. We recommend limited: with full editing a customer can close a task you have not delivered.

Does it work if I bill hourly?

That is its best case. The service is sold, hours are logged on tasks and delivery is invoiced, with profitability coming from the same data. The condition is capture discipline: without logged hours there is nothing to invoice or measure.

Do you use it?

Yes, we run our own delivery in Odoo with this circuit: sale creating project, hours on tasks, invoicing on delivery and a customer portal. That is why what we describe comes from using it, though we do not publish our project data out of client privacy.

Can I see profitability per project?

Yes, and it changes decisions more than most reports: it tells you what work is worth selling more of and what you are subsidising. It depends on two inputs: hourly cost per profile and hours actually being logged.

How long until it is running?

Configuration is among the fastest. What takes time is the habit change of logging hours, which is not a software matter.
